Ultimate Guide to Properly Washing Your Vehicle

Washing your vehicle the right way is essential for maintaining its appearance and protecting its surfaces from damage. In this guide, we’ll cover every step of the washing process, from cleaning your wheels to applying tire shine. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned detailer, follow these steps to achieve a professional-level finish.

Step 1: Cleaning the Wheels

Start by cleaning the wheels and tires, which are often the dirtiest parts of the vehicle. Using the right products and process ensures a thorough clean and proper bonding for tire shine to prevent sling-back onto your vehicle.

Wheel and Tire Cleaning Process:

  1. Apply Wheel Cleaner: Spray the wheel cleaner generously onto the wheel surface, ensuring complete coverage. Let the product dwell for a few minutes to break down dirt, brake dust, and contaminants.
  2. Apply Tire Cleaner: Spray a dedicated tire cleaner like P&S Undressed onto the tires to remove old tire shine, grime, and rubber buildup. Allow it to dwell for a moment.
  3. Agitate If Necessary: Use a tire brush to scrub the tires thoroughly for proper cleaning and to ensure optimal bonding for your tire shine. Wheels may not require agitation unless heavily soiled.
  4. Rinse Thoroughly: Use a pressure washer or hose to rinse off all the cleaner, ensuring no residue is left behind. Pay extra attention to the tires if you plan to apply tire shine afterward.

Step 2: Pre-Washing the Body

Pre-washing helps loosen dirt and grime before the main wash. This step minimizes the risk of swirls and scratches while making the main wash more effective. A few pre-washing options include:

Understanding Different Soap Types:

Choosing the right soap is crucial for effective cleaning and protecting your vehicle’s finish. Here’s an overview of different soap types:

pH-Neutral Soaps

  • Completely safe for all vehicles, including those with coatings or delicate finishes.
  • Perfect for maintenance washes.
  • Good options include 3D Pink Car Soap for a budget-friendly choice with high lubricity or Koch Chemie GSF for thick foam and excellent lubricity.
  • If unsure, always opt for a pH-neutral soap (7pH).

High Alkaline Soaps

  • Designed for pre-washing heavily soiled vehicles or vehicles that have been neglected.
  • Should not be used regularly as they can be harsh on clear coats over time.
  • Some can be used in buckets, while others are restricted to foam cannons only.
  • Good options include:
    • Koch Chemie Active Foam: A mild high alkaline soap with a pH of 9, suitable for buckets or foam cannons.
    • Koch Chemie Multi Star: A stronger option with a pH of 13.1, restricted to foam cannon use. Ideal for prepping vehicles for coatings or tackling extremely dirty surfaces.

Acidic Soaps

  • Primarily used for decontaminating ceramic coatings that are clogged with contaminants.
  • Can also remove light to mild water spotting from the surface.
  • Should be used sparingly to avoid damage to the finish.
  • A good option is CarPro Descale, an effective acidic soap for decontamination purposes.

Ceramic Soaps and Wash-and-Wax Soaps

  • Hydrosilex Ceramic Soap: One of the most popular soaps locally. It provides excellent cleaning power, high gloss, slickness, and a hydrophobic surface. The built-in ceramic sealant offers protection that lasts significantly longer than the wax in 3D Wash N Wax. It is highly concentrated and dilutable at 1oz per gallon, making it a cost-effective option.
  • 3D Wash N Wax: A good choice for adding a light layer of wax during maintenance washes. While Hydrosilex Ceramic Soap is more cost-effective due to its concentrated formula and superior longevity, 3D Wash N Wax remains a loved option for many customers.
  • These soaps are ideal for maintenance washes, enhancing lightly soiled vehicles, and providing some level of protection. Ceramic soaps are better for durability compared to wash-and-wax options.

Step 3: Two-Bucket Wash Method

Minimize swirl marks and scratches by using the two-bucket method. Use one bucket for soapy water and another for rinsing, placing grit guards in each bucket to trap debris. This method ensures contaminants are not reintroduced onto the paint.

Step 4: Drying the Vehicle

After washing, rinse the vehicle thoroughly. For drying, use a heated blow dryer like the MaxShine Mini Handheld Dryer. Follow up with a high-quality drying towel, such as the Autofiber Dreadnought or Autofiber Motherfluffer, to achieve a streak-free finish.

Step 5: Tire Shine and Trim Dressing

Tire Shine: Apply a product like Hydrosilex Tire Shine for a glossy, enriched look. Multiple layers can enhance the shine.

Trim Dressing: For long-lasting results, use products like Solution Finish for restoring black plastic trim or for more of a dressing use Koch Chemie PSS Plast Star for conditioning rubber and plastic surfaces. The product is durable against washes and rain.

By following these steps, you can achieve a professional-level finish and keep your vehicle looking its best!
